Family/Date Day
Yesterday, I had the joy of having an 'off' day, where I was technically available to help out in other buildings around campus for work, but no one took me up on it (except for in Halsell where I worked one desk hour in the evening, but that was literally nothing.. )
I had been holding the phone the night before for Buxton, and I dropped it off with Beth at 7:30 am. I had woke up early in the morning because my body thought it was funny to wake up a half hour before I had set my alarm, and I couldn't fall back asleep, so I just decided to be productive. I went through and cleaned my room, balanced my checkbook and did a bunch of organizing and putting things where they belong. I got all of my things together for the day ahead of me. It was pretty overcast when I left in the morning, but it had been sunny the days prior. Filled with the hope of another sunny day, I packed my bathing suit and beach towel along with some books in addition to an empty vase to take home with me to my family.
I had been looking forward to seeing the quilt my mom had made me. My mom is an excellent quilter, she is a wonderful woman who has skills back from the 'old fashioned' days (as I like to call them). She can make jams, jellies, preserves, cross-stitch, quilt, bake, she is a great role model for me. When I graduated high school she promised to make me a quilt before I went off to college. Well the last time I was home with Karl we went to the quilt store and picked out fabrics for it, and it was now complete! However, when I called before I left for home, mom said she had a cleaning job (she cleans houses as a side job during the summer when she isn't busy working at school). So I had to wait to see it. Instead, I was greeted by my sister and dad. Dad was drinking this iced coffee mix and offered me some, and Lauren was eating cereal. I had hoped to make breakfast with my sister, but that was now out of the question and I decided to take dad up on the coffee.
He and I chatted for a bit and we made plans to go out and run errands. We were off to the bank so I could deposit my 4 checks from RA-stuffs during the school year. This is $200, which is nice because I've been living off of $40 the past few weeks because I missed the pay period of June when I started my new job here this summer. After the bank (which had an unusually long line for it being only 10am on a Tuesday...) we went to Walmart to get Dad's fishing license and Salmon tags for Thursday and Friday. (He is going fishing with his friend Ralph those days).
When we got back, I grabbed my beach towel, put on my swimsuit, and sprawled out on the new purchase of a lawn chair in our backyard. After reading and soaking up some rays (yes the overcastness burned off) I went inside and ate some tacos with my sister, and then my mom came home from her cleaning job. I excitedly leapt up and got the door for her and when I saw the quilt, I was amazed.. I felt like it was perfect for me. (Yes, I know I picked out the patterns of fabric, but, it was just .. *sigh*) Here are pictures, but they don't do it justice.
After mom came home, she had some food and I got to hang out with the siblings watching game shows like Jeopardy, Chain Reaction and Lingo. We all went out and washed cars, Dad's, Al's, and Lauren's. We were gonna wash Zelda, but I'm really nit-picky, and like to do it by myself. (Zelda is the name of my car). After this mom and I went shopping at Walmart for more cleaning supplies as well as dropping off some of the cookies she had made and flowers for some people who were sick. (I wanna be like her when I get older, she is the kindest woman ever.) After we got back, it was time for dinner and dad had made steak and potatoes. Best. Dinner. Ever. :) I had a very happy tummy when I left. I also got to leave with some honeysuckle and the last Asiatic Lily from the garden. :)
When I got back to Corvallis I had to get my work stuff together, hopped on my bike and went over to work at the desk in Halsell, where I just sat and read and finished the book, What Einstein Told His Cook. This wonderful text was about kitchen science, and why things are the way they are, answering commonly asked questions, or stuff about technology in the kitchen, you should really look into it. After this, I biked back quickly to my room to get ready for Karl and I's date night.
The plan was to go back to his place (he was picking me up and being all gentlemanly) and then we were going to have dinner with his roommate Matt and his cousin, then would head off to Albany to go mini-golfing. Well, he showed up looking all schnazzy, button down short sleeve shirt, a different pair of shoes and nice shorts. He had his hand behind his back and I noticed that immediately, because we usually go and hug one another, but he was hesitant. He handed me a box of strawberries (my favorite fruit) and then explained to me that he was pretty sure these were my favorite flowers, and handed me a bouquet of purple lilies. I honestly don't think I have gotten a legitimate bouquet of flowers from a guy in over 4-5 years from my first boyfriend. I got handpicked ones from Andrew between Senior high school and Frosh year at college, but a legit bouquet of flowers from a boyfriend, and my favorites at that... I kind of started to cry. We hugged, crushing the flowers ever-so-slightly and then we ran up to my room so I could put them in water. (They were looking a little parched.) So we did that and then went over to his house and had pasta and salad followed by rice crispy treats. Then we were off to mini golfing.
We got lost on the way there and turned the wrong way.. (my fault.. I thought it was genuinely the other direction.. oops). But we made it there. He was apologizing and he didn't need to. I love getting lost and going on adventures, and when you love someone, it doesn't matter what you do, as long as you're with them and enjoying their company. I was so happy the whole time, being a total dork. I seriously never feel more myself than when I am with him. I'm completely comfortable to be me. Even more me than when I'm by myself, because I know he appreciated who I am. It's a weird feeling to come to I think. Karl is really good at mini golf. Me, not so much, but I understand angles and stuff, so I'd get close, but my technique needs some help. We didn't get thru all 18 holes, in fact, we only did 9. It was getting late fast, and we were lolly-gagging and taking our sweet time on the course, for no one else was out there. We took a few funny pictures, but had more fun just being there.
Basically, just one of the best date nights ever. I am so blessed and lucky. I've never really dated my best friend before. I've dated someone, and they became my best friend because I pushed everyone else away... But this is like, genuinely my best friend, shares my hopes, dreams and goals in life, conversations and laughs come with ease, bleh... I'm such a sap. What happened to 'miss independent'? (See Kelly Clarkson song here)
Okay, that was my awesome family/date day. Today I've mostly been on here blogging and picking up phones from other buildings to hold while my co-workers are out for the day. I updated a roster for one of the conferences and have been doing laundry. I think I'll probably curl up with a new book after I post this. It's sunny outside and I kinda wanna soak up some rays, but I also wanna nap.. Naps are awesome, but I know I shouldn't.
Anyways, thanks for reading! I hope it was as fun for you to read as it was for me to experience. :)

Oh how fun! So great to read you are still doing well. We'd love to meet your best friend sometime!
ReplyDelete:) You will get to meet him sometime! He's been over to Dallas a few times. It's nice that home is close to Corvallis so its more convenient for him to visit my family than for me to visit his in Grants Pass. (Actually today I get to do just that! I'm really excited!)
