Quiet Foggy Drives and Mornings

Good Morning! (or Afternoon or Evening, whatever it is for you.)

I woke up this morning and decided to sleep in an extra hour. Even though that probably wasn't the wisest decision and neither is choosing to blog when there are so many things going on this week, I decided that since I woke up an hour later, it means I would only have an hour at the library before I had to go to a 1 on 1 with one of the Hall Council Execs, which wouldn't provide me with enough time to get into the zone of studying. So I decided to blog.

This last 3 day weekend was mostly spent studying. I have 3 midterms this week. 1 is today in Heat Transfer, 1 is Thursday for Physical Chemistry (in which my professor had a family emergency and will be out for the next 2 weeks), and lastly is Thermodynamics on Friday. (Yes, I'm still taking thermo. It is a 3 term class...)

This term I've been trying to study on my own. A lot of the time I will always get together with others to talk about how to approach the problem and better understand it without ever cracking the text book. This term I've decided to read a lot of the text and go through and highlight things to help me better understand what is happening. It's a lot more conceptual than just plugging in numbers into given equations. (Well I think P.Chem is like that.. ) Anyways, I just spent a lot of time reading and highlighting in the texts this weekend and I feel a bit better. I still have to go to people and ask for help, but at least this way I've done the vast majority on my own and now I better understand it alone than having to rely on others. Relying on others and trying to make your schedule work is ridiculously difficult with a job, a boyfriend, and classes.

Aside from classes and midterms, I've been applying to jobs and weeding out the ones that are far away for the summer. I've filled out my FAFSA and qualified for some grant money (which is nice!). I applied for a Co-op Director Job here on Campus. Interviews are on Friday for which I'm a tad nervous about, but I've interviewed with UHDS many times so I feel that I should be okay. I've just been talking to people about it and I'm wondering if I'd be a good fit for the Co-op that is open. I want to be, but I cannot change it if I am not. It is an all female house with about 50 gals. I'd get an 'apartment' style living, very similar to the Resident Directors in the Residence Halls, only instead of an additional meal plan, we have a house chef (cool right?). My biggest fear (and this always is) is conflict/resolution styles. I understand I'd be handling the majority of conduct, I'm just wondering how things will be different as far as the troubles that arise in a house full of females and also being a female trying to handle it. I've generally been the person that is 'too nice' when dealing with things, so much that the point doesn't make its way across to those I'm communicating with. Anyways, there are several other people interviewing as well, I'd say there are a little less than 10 of us (I think..) and if that doesn't work out, then I've filled out my 'returning as an SRA' email.

I just can't think of any other position that I'd like to have while being a student. I could work in a lab, but then I'd have to find someone to room with and worry about commuting to and from campus, and providing my own food. Basically, I'd have to be an adult and pay rent and all of that, but I'd much rather prefer to stay where I'm at, however I do long for a place to be quiet when I go to bed. Or to have a nice place to study within where I live instead of having to travel to the library or Gleeson constantly for some peace.

Speaking of peace, after having a decently long weekend of studying, with a few breakthroughs in understanding material, Karl and I left for the beach at around 5pm yesterday to have a bit of a night trip.
We drove out to Newport after being stuck in my room studying all day. Karl's favorite place to escape to is Newport. I feel like he obsesses over it like some people do with Disneyland. We went there and decided to do the classic thing and went to Mo's and shared a Cannonball bowl of their famous Clam Chowder along with some garlic cheesy bread. I read the trivia questions off to Karl, because I knew that if he read them to me I wasn't likely to enjoy myself because I wouldn't know any of the answers. He always manages to know a lot more of the 'random trivia' than I do. After this we went to walk along the beach in the moonlight; thought it had been very foggy in the valley, it was clear at the coast and you could see the stars. It was beautiful how the rolling tides reflected the light. We drove around Nye Beach for a bit looking for a dessert shop to be open, but found no such luck. We eventually were driving back out of town to head home and we found Flashbacks, which is a lot like Rock n' Rogers, so we stopped there. They had a jukebox playing songs and several videogame machines. When we finished our shake and sundae, we went to the videogame arcade part and played the claw machine and racing games. I ended up wining a cute little turtle coin purse and Karl and I didn't do half bad on the racing. He got 4th and I got 5th. After this we drove home, back through the fog to Corvallis.

That is all in the past now, and I am going to head off to my first meeting of the day, then to the library, then back to Southside for lunch, and then to the library again to try and figure out some homework. Class is at 2, and then Class again at 5, followed by a quick trip to the staff meeting which I'll be missing our inservice day due to class, then my midterm at 7, and duty as soon as I'm done with that. Tuesdays are such long days for me. :(

Anyways, I hope you are doing well and that life is treating you well in the New Year. I apologize for writing so infrequently and not getting to put as much philosophical thought into them as much as I used to. I don't have as much time for that now lately. :( Only school, work, and boyfriend.

Thanks for reading!
-M.E.
