It's never easy to start something..

I was having this discussion with my mother and sister the other day. I think it was yesterday. So I had gotten up yesterday with the entire day to myself with nothing to do until later that evening. I awoke to mom working on one (of the many) scrap quilts for a couple who was to be married. My mom is so craftsy, I adore her and am envious of her many motherly talents. So, upon seeing this, I thought to myself, "I have a whole day of nothing planned, why not start an afghan for when I have a house of my own? I'm always cold anyways, I could use it before hand. I haven't crocheted in forever. It'd be a good use of my day." So I made myself a cup of coffee complete with the ever present hazelnut creamer that is always in the fridge when I'm at home, got ready, and went off to Wally-World (this is what I like to call Walmart). It was earlier in the morning, around 9am or so, and there weren't many people there. (Thank goodness, because I always end up talking to people whenever I go shopping. Especially in such a small town..) So I was in and out of there quite quickly, minus the fact that yarn is in the crafts department, and I tend to get a bit distracted by my thoughts of 'oooh, I can make this..' and 'ah, this yarn is really soft, it would go well with this color, but wait! It's not the same amount and I actually get more yarn for this price in comparison with this one...' You get the idea. I have the ADD mentality when in a craft store.

So I arrive back home and start working away on my afghan. It was inspired to me by the gift my sister got from her friend from school who also crochets, so I borrowed the gift and took notes on it, how many stitches across, the color pattern, etc. Then I started working away. Now when you crochet, as you start, the entire thing tends to curl into a circle. Not a full circle, but it likes to curl, or wrap around like a spring. It's the most annoying thing ever. But once you're past the starting point, its not so bad. It's similar to a lot of things. As I was complaining aloud to my mom and sister, we came to the conclusion that it is difficult to start a lot of things. A diet, workout plans, a relationship, various new years resolutions, to start stopping smoking or drinking ( I feel like this counts, but the wording was atrocious, my apologies) , a lot of different things can be hard to start.

For myself, things that seem more attainable, are goals rather than "I will do this!" statements, with which I tend to let myself down. So instead, I make SMART goals. I learned this acronym waaay back in my freshman year of high school. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-Bound.  I'm probably going to spend time between rounds thinking of some goals for this coming term. I'm sure I'll be asked about it at the upcoming staff meetings, and I know of some things that I have concerns and worries for, but I am honestly just ready to hit the ground rolling this quarter and do significantly better than last quarter. Hmm.. I shall ponder goals later and get back to you about that.

In other news, I got to hang out with my best friend last night! I hadn't seen her in awhile and so we had a double date night and played wii and watched a movie at her & her boyfriends place. Brad came over to my house first and we carpooled over there. (Brad and I are dating. Yep yep. If you didn't see that one coming, well... you don't read these well enough. I felt I put in plenty of foreshadow in these...) We did wii bowling and Mario Party (which I should've believed Josh when he said that Stacia has it rigged to win everytime... She slaughtered us.) And then we watched Rise of Planet of the Apes. It was pretty good. I have never seen Planet of the Apes, so I don't know what happens afterward, and I was almost a bit upset about the ending, but then after they had started rolling the credits, another (crucial) part of the film is played, and it makes more sense. I just feel like this one 'minor detail' should've been paid a bit more attention since it is very important in how the story plays out. I guess I just like having details and facts, but how many facts can their be when it is a science fiction film? *sigh. Oh well..

Today was just about packing mostly. I actually got to have lunch with my Leadership teacher from High School. She is phenomenal. Probably one of the wisest people I know, also well traveled and knowledgable of many things. I love getting to chat with her about her family and what she is up to and what her current thoughts are on situations in life. She is one of the few adults I feel like I can trust just being myself. I can be honest, real, and uncensored. I hope one day I can be like her. She probably had one of the biggest influences on me while going through the High School. She has this way of giving you freedom, resources, and a few guiding words and then she lets you loose. We were talking about this while at lunch, and how it produces better results than say, a teacher who hovers and constantly corrects or tells you how to do things, rather than letting you discover things on your own. I feel, in our best learning situations, we've all been told there is something that we should not do. Yet, as soon as we do it, and discover why it is that we should not do it, we then will listen to whomever was trying to persuade you against it in the first place. My teacher let us make these mistakes. She had faith in me, that I could exceed and excel in whatever task she had given me, and then let me go and do it. I'd ask questions along the way, and she'd never tell me the straight up answer but would ask guiding questions to help me discover it by myself. She is one of the best teachers ever and I don't think I'd be an RA or have had the confidence to be on Hall Council last year and run for the position I did. I know you're probably reading this, and I just want to say thank you for being so awesome and always keeping in touch with me. You're the best.

After lunch with my amazing mentor, I went home and packed everything up into my car. I had so much crap from Christmas, it was ridiculous. I then filled up my car with gas and headed to Salem. (Yes, Salem, not straight to Corvallis). I went and visited with a gal-pal of mine whom goes to College Group with Brad and I just had a nice chat with her. I was supposed to chat with her before holidays and such, but we got busy. She has the cutest little baby girl and I got to play with her. We watched Rio, which I had seen at the drive-in for my birthday this last year. Anyways, I hung out and chatted with her about some stuff, and then I texted Brad to see if/when he had finished his writing so I could 'surprise' him and say congratulations for such. But, I'm not very subtle, and.. well I just failed in my element of surprise, so next time I'll probably just lie. Yep. That's what I'll do. I'm not good at surprises. I'm good at planning things. And I'm actually good at lying, not that it is something to brag about.. I'm still disappointed in the lack of my surprise. Meh. I still got to see him and say hello, however brief that was, it was nice to say hi and swing by. I also realized, that I still never picked up my book from my friend while I was chatting with her. Oops. Forgetful me. :/

Then I came back to Corvallis. I didn't really like the feel of things as I drove into town. I know it is 'home', but I just kind of felt this numbness and reminder of icky things that have happened since I've been to college. I don't know, it was an odd flood of thoughts. So I'd been in a weird mood since I drove down the bridge that over-looks South Town. blech. I hate bad memories.

I was on duty at the desk and got to chat with Conner for a bit. I'm sad he is leaving our staff, but he has his dreams to go chase, so we shouldn't stop him. I crocheted the whole time at desk as well as made a list for myself of things to do. A lot of it is applications and internships and scholarships and a letter of recommendation that I have to write. (Yes, I'm doing the recommending.. weird right?) So there is all of that, and I did rounds, and now I'm probably going to go sit and read The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom. It's really inspirational and I'm starting to love biographies. I hope to one day live a life that is excitingly surrendered to Christ and that I can go on some adventures like that. I love my routine, don't get me wrong, but sometimes I like my life being shaken up a bit to just live on the edge of things and to have nothing else, but to trust in God; that would be something else.

"Perhaps only when human effort had done its best and failed, would God's power alone be free to work."
-Corrie ten Boom The Hiding Place
Thanks for reading as always. :)
