Must I go through this to write about it?

"Why was that old fellow such a marvelous propaganda technician? Because he had so many insane excruciating things to get excited about. You've got to be hurt and upset; otherwise you can't think of the really good penetrating, X-rayish phrases."
-Helmholtz from Brave New World, speaking about Shakespeare.

The funny thing is, how true this statement can be.

I feel I am the most in touch or in tune with my feelings and able to articulate such when my emotions are high. Be it happy and high on a cloud, or sad and low in the dumps, it is these feelings that we can draw from and then choose to describe and relate to an audience. These feelings, this 'emotional contagion' , as described in my Communications class, is what makes us good at discovering the 'penetrating, X-rayish phrases.'

Of course one can write of hurt, agony, pain, bliss, attraction, passion, sorrow, tension, any array of such. However, can you relate it in such a way that your audience knows the feeling of which you speak of? Is it the detail of you get the butterflies in your stomach, that soon transform into helium that lift you up onto your toes for a kiss? Or is it the description of your cheeks flushed red, eyes squinting, holding back a sea of tears that once they start, they don't stop. They flood your face with saltiness and drip down your neck. Your head is  pounding, and no matter how much water you drink between the sobs, this headache won't pass.
Can you relate? Have you ever experienced this? Can your audience relate even if they haven't? Can you make them care about what you speak?

For once, I actually learned something in my Communications class, though it probably wasn't in the way that they intended. I took it more as in a writing perspective opposed to a speaking one. However, it makes me excited to write. I had a post that I had partially written, I'll post it later, but it'll be a bit choppy due to the time lapse.

This book, Brave New World, it is quite wonderful and accurate in a bizarre way. I love what I learn from it, even if it is only a different perspective. I'm excited to finish it.

Anyways, I might write some poetry again when I have time tomorrow. I'm excited to use this new stuff of trying to relate to the audience more so. Right now, I'm exhausted. I only had 4 and a half hours of sleep last night.. and my friend left only a half hour ago.. and I need to catch up on all of my lost sleep. I haven't had caffeine in a long time, and I'm not about to start relying on the stuff again.
Thanks for reading my 'before bed' ramblings.

  1. I agree that when emotions are high we are more able accurately articulate them and/or be in touch with them. When I write poetry for instance (which I do frequently but I rarely put them on my blog), I try to do it when a particular feeling strikes me. That way, the words almost write themselves if that makes sense.
